For decades, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) was considered a childhood condition—one that young boys outgrew by the time they reached adolescence. The stereotypical image of ADHD painted a picture of a restless, disruptive school-aged child unable to sit still or follow instructions. As a result, millions of individuals—particularly girls, marginalized people, and those who were high-functioning—slipped through the cracks of early diagnosis. It wasn’t until adulthood, often amid personal or professional breakdowns, that many came to realize the chaos they had normalized was actually the manifestation of a neurodevelopmental disorder. Today, awareness of ADHD in adults is growing, yet understanding remains shallow. ADHD does not disappear with age; instead, it evolves. While hyperactivity may fade or become internalized, difficulties with executive function, emotional regulation, time perception, and self-motivation often intensify under the complex demands of adult life. From struggling to meet work deadlines, to forgetting appointments, to battling a relentless inner critic, adults with ADHD face a unique set of challenges that are frequently misunderstood or misdiagnosed.
